9 dead, 34 injured as bridge collapses in Indonesia
Dushanbe, 17.10.2016. /NIAT “Khovar”/. A bridge in Bali resort island of Indonesia collapsed on Sunday evening, killing nine people and injuring 34 others, Belarusian telegraph agency reports citing the head of local rescuer.
The accident happened at around 7:30 p.m. local time when the suspension bridge connecting Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan was suspected of being overloaded, Head of Search and Rescue Office of Bali Didi Hanzar said.
«Too many people and vehicles were passing the bridge during a religious ceremony, so that a rope of the bridge snapped,» he told.
According to Xinhua news agency, the rescuers immediately evacuated the victims and searched the area around the bridge for other victims that might have fallen into the water, Hanzar said.
«For tonight, the search and rescue operation is halted, and it resumes at 5:00 tomorrow (Monday),» he said.
Scores of people and motorcycles fell into the water just before the bridge collapsed. The number of missing persons is still unknown, Sutopo Purwo nugroho, spokesman of National Disaster Management Agency told. All the injured are being treated in a nearby health clinic, said Sutopo.
