Elected Secretary General of the United Nations, Guterres will meet in Moscow with Putin and Lavrov
Elected UN Secretary-General, antónio Guterres, on Thursday will visit Moscow, where will be received by Russian President Vladimir Putin and will meet with the Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov. The main topics of the upcoming talks will be the work of the world organization, increase its efficiency, to overcome the crises in Syria and Ukraine, TASS reported.
That Putin on 24 November will Guterres , reported the press service of the Kremlin. “On the agenda of the meeting issues of strengthening the Central coordinating role of the UN in international Affairs, improving the effectiveness of the organization, including in the fight against terrorism and resolve crises in Syria and Ukraine”, – have informed in a press-service.
The issue of the UN’s work will also be discussed at a separate meeting with Lavrov Guterres. As reported by the official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, the topics of the talks will be “primarily ways of settlement of acute regional conflicts, increasing the efficiency and prospects of reforming the world organization and, of course, the issues of interaction with the Secretariat.”
It should be noted that on 13 October, the UN General Assembly adopted, without a vote a resolution on the appointment of Guterres ninth administrative head of the organization. The former Prime Minister of Portugal, appointed by the UN Secretary General “for a term beginning January 1, 2017 and expiring on 31 December 2021.”
Guterres, 2015 held the post of the UN high Commissioner for refugees, has joined the race for the post of General Secretary one of the first (in February of this year) and became the winner at the end of each of the six provisional ballots that took place in the security Council. In total, the elections were contested by 13 candidates, including former heads of state, as well as current and former Ministers of foreign Affairs.
