UN Security Council to gather for Syria ceasefire meeting — source
DUSHANBE, 30.12.2016. /NIAT “Khovar”/. The UN Security Council will gather for a closed meeting in the coming hours to discuss the situation in Syria following the announcement of a nationwide ceasefire, a diplomatic source told TASS.
«Russia requested this meeting. It is expected to focus on the ceasefire announced in Syria,» the source said.
Another UN source said Russia may suggest adopting a resolution in support of the truce.
The meeting will be held straight after an open session to consider a draft resolution extending certain provisions of the 1995 oil-for-food program for Iraq.
Earlier on Thursday, the Russian president announced that agreements had been reached on a ceasefire in Syria and readiness to start peace talks. Three documents have been signed. The first document concerning the cessation of hostilities was signed by the Syrian government and the armed opposition. The second document is a package of measures to monitor the ceasefire, while the third one is a statement of readiness to start peace talks.
The Syrian military command announced it would halt all combat actions throughout the country’s territory from midnight local time.
