11 bodies of migrants found on rescued dinghy off Libyan shores
DUSHANBE, 26.07.2017. /NIAT «Khovar»/. Eleven bodies of migrants were found by rescuers in a dinghy in one of two operations off the coast of Libya, Xinhua reports citing the Italian Coast Guard.
According to ANSA news agency, another 167 migrants on board the same dinghy were rescued by a ship run by Spanish non-government organization (NGO) Proactiva Open Arms. The other 90 migrants on another boat were rescued by a ship run by Save the Children, a well-known NGO.
The European Council earlier on Tuesday extended the Sophia Operation, the EU’s naval mission to combat migrant trafficking in the central-southern Mediterranean, until the end of 2018.
The EU authorities also opened up to Italy’s requests for more help with the migrant crisis.
«We will start the revision of the operational plan to include new tasks as a priority in the next few days,» said the EU’s foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini.
This would include the «reinforcement of shared responsibility among member states», she added.
