Last Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR Dies at the Age of 88
DUSHANBE, 10.01.2019 (NIAT Khovar) – Last Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and former member of the Russian State Duma Anatoly Lukyanov died on Wednesday at the age of 88, Smolensk Region Governor Alexey Ostrovsky wrote on Twitter.
«We received very sad news. A notable Smolensk native and overall amazing person A.I. Lukyanov, who served as the last chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, has passed away today. Anatoly Ivanovich did me an honor and became my authorized representative at the general gubernatorial elections. May he rest in peace,» said Ostrovsky.
Lukyanov’s daughter Elena, who is a professor at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, confirmed to TASS news agency that her father has passed away.
Anatoly Lukyanov was born on May 7, 1930 in the city of Smolensk in western Russia. He served as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from March 1990 until September 1991, having been preceded by Mikhail Gorbachev. After Lukyanov’s term, the office was abolished.
Lukyanov was a member of the Russian State Duma from 1993 until 2003. He was elected from the Smolensk Region. In 1994-2000, he was a member of the presidium of the Russian Communist Party’s Central Committee.
He will be buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy Cemetery on Friday.
