Concensus Reached at the Closing of the Conference on Countering Terrorism and Dushanbe Declaration Adopted
DUSHANBE, 18.05.2019. (NIAT Khovar) – The high-level conference International and Regional Cooperation in the Fight Against Terrorism and Its Financing Sources, Including Drug Trafficking and Organized Crime closed with a general consensus on the ways and means of countering terrorism.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin, the UN Deputy Secretary-General Vladimir Voronkov, the Deputy Secretary General for Common Security, Defence Policy and Crisis Response at the European External Action Service Pedro Serrano and the Director of the OSCE Secretariat Conflict Prevention Center Ambassador Marcel Peszko attended the press conference.
“This high-level international conference was organized by the government of Tajikistan in collaboration with the United Nations, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, as well as a number of partner countries,” said Muhriddin.
It is the first international event within the framework of the follow-up process of the high-level International Conference on Countering Terrorism and Preventing Violent Extremism, which was held on 3-4 May 2018, which was also initiated by Tajikistan and held in Dushanbe.
The participants of the press conference were unanimous in their agreement that the new so called Dushanbe Process will serve as an important platform for comprehensive dialogue, exchange of knowledge and experience, as well as for intensifying efforts for countering modern threats and challenges to security.
It was noted that the financing of terrorism and its links to organized crime and illicit drug trafficking pose a serious threat to international peace and security and counteracting these threats is important for ensuring the stability and development of the Central Asian region and beyond.
Eliminating illicit drug trafficking and terrorism requires collaborated effort of the international community at all levels, since no country or institution can independently confront these threats.
The Dushanbe Declaration was adopted following the conference.
