Global Peace Index Ranks Tajikistan Ahead of China, US and Russia

DUSHANBE, 03.03.2020. (NIAT Khovar) – Tajikistan has climbed 12 positions in the Global Peace Index of The Institute for Economics and Peace. Tajikistan is in 105th place among 163 countries.

The index contains assessments of the situation by country based on such criteria as political and economic stability, the level of terrorism, police violence, the country’s participation in hostilities, arms exports, respect for human rights, and the level of social cohesion.

Among Central Asian countries, Kazakhstan has the best indicator (64th place), and the worst is in Turkmenistan (115th place).

Afghanistan is in last place (163rd place), and Iceland ranks first.

Tajikistan is ahead of countries such as China (110th), Armenia (118th), US (128th), Saudi Arabia (129th), Azerbaijan (130th), Iran (139th), India (141th), Israel (146th), Ukraine (150th), Turkey (152th), Pakistan (153th) and Russia (154th).

The Institute for Economics and Peace is a global think tank headquartered in Sydney with branches in New York, Mexico City and the Hague. It works in partnership with a number of think tanks, public organizations, and academic institutions, including the Aspen Institute, Center for Strategic and International Studies, International Peace Institute, Open Society Foundations, and King’s College London. It also cooperates with intergovernmental organizations such as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the UNDP, UNICEF, NATO, the World Bank, and the United Nations Peacebuilding Support Office.
