Central Asian Research Centers Discuss Pandemic’s Impact on Economy and Security
DUSHANBE, 05.06.2020. (NIAT Khovar) – Yesterday, a strategic coordination web consultation took place on the topic of new challenges of terrorism and violent extremism in Central Asia due to COVID-19.
The online meeting was organized by the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) in conjunction with the UN Counter-Terrorism Office (UN CTO).
The first session focused on the impact of the pandemic on the national and regional security and socio-economic development priorities, vulnerable populations in terms of extremism, as well as in terms of discrimination and human rights, and on regional interaction and cooperation.
Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, head of the UNRCPD for Central Asia Natalia German, UN Deputy Secretary General, head of the UN CTO Vladimir Voronkov, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenchi and representatives of Strategic Studies Institutes of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan participated at the meeting.
During the second session the participants exchanged views on the agenda of the next meeting of the Central Asian expert forum, which is scheduled to take place in the second half of 2020 in Kyrgyzstan.
