DUSHANBE, 09.02.2021 (NIAT Khovar) – The Chairman of the Islamic Renaissance Party (IRP) banned in Tajikistan Muhiddin Kabiri was sentenced in absentia. This information was provided yesterday by the Chairman of the Supreme Court Shermuhammad Shohiyon at a press conference.
Shohiyon stressed that the investigation into Kabiri’s case was thorough. Currently, further information cannot be disclosed due to the confidentiality of materials.
Back in 2018, the Supreme Court announced the hearing of Kabiri’s case in absentia behind closed doors. He was charged under 16 articles of the Criminal Code, including murder, theft of weapons and explosive devices, armed rebellion, public calls for violence and violent seizure of power.
IRP’s chairman left Tajikistan immediately after the parliamentary elections in March 2015. His exact location is unknown. Presumably, he is located in the European Union.
In the autumn of the same year, the republic’s authorities recognized the IRP as a terrorist and extremist organization and banned its activities in the country. The party was blamed for the armed insurgency in Tajikistan on September 4, 2015. Later, all members of the party’s supreme political council were arrested.
