DUSHANBE, 28.05.2025 (NIAT Khovar) – On May 29, Dushanbe will host the First High-Level International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation, an unprecedented event that has already captured the attention of the global community amid growing concern over the climate crisis and the alarming pace of glacier retreat.
This historic conference is convened at the initiative of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, within the framework of the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, proclaimed by the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In the lead-up to the official opening, a series of thematic forums and side events will bring together scientists, climate experts, government officials, youth activists, and civil society representatives from around the world. These gatherings aim to foster dialogue and collaboration on scientific, policy-based, and practical solutions for preserving glaciers — vital reservoirs of freshwater and key regulators of the global climate system.
The conference is expected to welcome over 2,500 participants from 80 UN member states and 70 international organizations, including prime ministers, vice presidents, ministers, UN assistant secretaries-general, and more than 350 journalists from leading domestic and international media outlets such as Euronews and Al Jazeera.
According to the Conference Secretariat, one of the most significant outcomes will be the adoption of the Dushanbe Glacier Declaration — a global call to action urging governments, institutions, and stakeholders to implement immediate and coordinated measures to halt glacier loss and address its far-reaching consequences.
Other key documents to be presented include the Co-Chairs’ Summary and the Dushanbe Call to Action, which will outline the major recommendations, priority areas, and pathways for sustained international cooperation.
The Dushanbe conference is set to become a pivotal moment in the global climate dialogue, reinforcing scientific exchange, advancing collective commitments, and catalyzing transformative action for the protection of glaciers and the promotion of resilient and sustainable development.
