DUSHANBE, 16.05.2025 (NIAT Khovar) – Tajikistan is actively preparing to host the High-Level International Conference on Glacier Preservation, which will serve as a vital platform for global cooperation and resource mobilization aimed at protecting the world’s glaciers.

Sanoi Boizoda, the representative of Tajikistan to the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea and Head of the Secretariat for the Conference, told Khovar news agency that preparations are advancing effectively and dynamically.

“We are making significant efforts to ensure the success of this event. We are also witnessing strong interest and wide-ranging support from UN member states, UN agencies, regional and international organizations, financial institutions, major groups, and other stakeholders,” Boizoda said.

To coordinate all aspects of the conference, the Government of Tajikistan has established a National Organizing Committee, led by the Prime Minister. The Secretariat operates under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) are supporting the preparation of the event under a mandate from the UN General Assembly.

“The primary objective of the conference is to raise global awareness about the critical role of glaciers and to highlight the urgency of halting their continued melting, calving, and retreat. It aims to promote global solutions through joint actions, scientific innovation, and coordinated policy efforts,” Boizoda noted.

The conference is expected to contribute to the implementation of key UN resolutions that have designated 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Preservation and declared 2025–2034 as the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences. It will offer a platform for mobilizing resources, enhancing international cooperation, and expanding partnerships among governments, scientists, civil society, and other stakeholders.

A special focus of the event will be the development of transboundary cooperation to safeguard glaciers and ensure their socio-economic benefits for affected regions.

In addition, the conference will support the advancement of major global agendas such as the Pact for the Future, adopted at the Summit of the Future on September 22, 2024, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with the goal of driving transformative action that strengthens the resilience of ecosystems and communities reliant on glaciers.
