DUSHANBE, 03.06.2025 (NIAT Khovar) – Elisa Fernandez, Deputy Regional Director for UN Women in Europe and Central Asia, emphasized the vital role of women in addressing climate change and glacier preservation during an interview with a Khovar correspondent on the sidelines of the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation, held in Dushanbe from May 29 to 31.

Fernandez participated in the Women in Glaciers’ Preservation Forum, one of the key thematic events of the conference, which brought together high-level officials including the Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan, leaders from the Central Asian Women Leaders’ Caucus, and representatives of UN Women.

“This was a very rich discussion,” Fernandez said. “We talked about the important role of women not only in glaciers’ preservation, but also in broader climate change and water management efforts.”

She underlined that women are disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change, particularly glacier melt: “As glaciers melt and water becomes scarcer, women face greater burdens — whether it’s collecting water, farming, or ensuring food security. It is essential to recognize these gender-specific impacts.”

Fernandez stressed that women must be part of the solution at every level: “We need to see more women involved in climate discussions — at the community level, in national decision-making, in parliaments, and in shaping the policies and programs that address these challenges.”

She also highlighted the importance of youth engagement: “We want to see young men and women thinking together about how to protect glaciers and tackle climate change.”

Sharing her impressions of Tajikistan, Fernandez added warmly: “This is my third time in Tajikistan. I love the vibrant colors, the food, the traditional dresses — and especially the music. Yesterday, I had the chance to dance a little, and it made me very happy.”

The conference gathered over 2,600 participants from more than 90 countries, serving as a key platform for international cooperation on climate resilience and sustainable water management.
