Mudslides in the Forecast as Multiple Districts of Tajikistan Experience Flooding
DUSHANBE, 04.06.2019. (NIAT Khovar) – Due to unstable weather which will continue until June 7, several districts of Tajikistan have experienced flooding.
In the districts and cities of Vose, Farkhor, Bobodjon Ghafurov, Konibodom and Isfara mudslides caused partial damage to arable land, roads and private residences, reported the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CESCD) under the government of Tajikistan.
Heavy precipitation caused mudslides in the district of Konibodom, which caused damage to 11 private homes.
The emergency commissions of the districts are working at the local level and special equipment is being used to clear the consequences brought on by mudslides. There are no casualties.
The current forecast which calls for more precipitation and rising temperatures will likely lead to intense melting of snow in the mountains, which in turn can lead to soil erosion and movement, rising water levels in rivers and reservoirs, which can lead to landslides and the erosion of the river and lake coastlines. The forecasted precipitation increases the danger of avalanches, mudflows and rockfalls.
The CESCD warns against traveling to areas suseptible to avalanches and urges residents to be vigilant and cautious.
