Tajik Judokas Bring Home Gold and Bronze Medals
DUSHANBE, 30.07.2019. (NIAT Khovar) – Tajik unior judoka Ghanijon Ghaniev won the gold at the Asian Oceania Cadet & Junior Judo Championships, reported the National Olympic Committee of Tajikistan.
The competition, which brought together 159 athletes (94 man and 65 woman) from 17 Asian countries, was held on July 27-28 in Taipei, China.
Ghaniev, who competed in the 73 kg weight category, defeated the Australian Danny Vojnikevich and come to the quarter final. In the semifinals, he defeated Liang Chu representing China, and in the finals he defeated Kazakhstan’s representative Serikbol Yestay.
During last year’s Asian Junior Championships in Lebanon Ganiev took the bronze.
Competing in the 90 kg weight category, another Tajik judoka Mansur Rahmon won the bronze medal. Rahmon defeated the Australian judoka Liam Spillen in the quarterfinals but was defeated by Sheng-Kai Lin from the host country. He went on to defeat the Kazakh athlete Nurasil Bolat for third place.
In total, the Tajik team won three medals,- one gold and two bronze. Other two Tajik athletes, Haydarsho Mirzomuddinov in the weight category up to -73kg, and Ibrohimjon Elmurodov in the weight category up to +90, were defeated by their opponents in the first round.
Among women, Ahliya Muminova won the bronze medal in the weight category up to 52kg.
