UNESCO Director-General Azoulay Plans to Attend Sarazm 5500th Anniversary Celebrations
DUSHANBE, 18.02.2020. (NIAT Khovar) – The celebration of the 5500th anniversary of ancient Sarazm is scheduled for September 12. The UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay is expected to attend the celebrations. This was provided today by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin.
“2019 was a fruitful year in terms of cooperation between Tajikistan and UNESCO. In particular, at the UNESCO general conference, Tajikistan’s proposal to celebrate the 5500th anniversary of Sarazm and the 700th anniversary of the famous poet Kamol Khujandi was included on the UNESCO Holidays List,” Muhriddin said.
By a governmental decree dated September 21, 2001, the Sarazm archaeological complex was declared the Center for the Formation of Tajik Civilization, Craft and Urban Planning — Sarazm Historical Archaeological Reserve.
On July 31, 2010, Sarazm was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
