Joint Statement of the Tajik-Kyrgyz Governmental Delegations on the Border Delimitation and Demarcation

DUSHANBE, 05.05.2021 (NIAT Khovar) – On May 1 and May 2 in Batken, Tajik and Kyrgyz governmental delegations on border delimitation and demarcation held a regular joint meeting.

In the spirit of mutual trust and good neighborliness, referring to the ancient history of peaceful coexistence of the two fraternal peoples, a thorough exchange of views took place on the adoption of urgent measures aimed at resolving the situation on the Tajik-Kyrgyz border, and resuming and revitalizing the work of the joint commission.

The heads of delegations expressed complete mutual understanding on the need for an early description of the Tajik-Kyrgyz state border line in the remaining sections.

The parties agreed to describe the border project line in the sections from border point numbered 43 to point 61 and from border point 135 to border point 141, to use documents and materials of the national-territorial demarcation of 1924-1927 and the 1989 parity commission.

Topographical working groups have been instructed to describe the border project line in the above sections from May 5 through May 9.

Also, in the areas of Ovchi Kalacha of Bobojon Gafurov district, Chorkuh, Somoniyon, Khojai Alo of Isfara of Tajikistan, as well as the settlements of Maksat, Kulundu Leilek, Koktosh, Kokterek, Aksai of Batken districts of Kyrgyzstan, working groups will begin to carry out topographic work and describe the border project line in the above sections until May 17.

An agreement was reached that before the completion of the process of delimitation, demarcation and legal registration of the Tajik-Kyrgyz state border, for the purpose of unimpeded movement of citizens and the passage of vehicles and goods of Tajikistan, the Tajik side will use and maintain the Khojai Alo-Vorukh road bypassing the eastern side of the Tangi (Kapchygai) settlement. The status of this road will be determined by a separate state agreement between the two countries.
In order to start the construction of this road as soon as possible, working groups have been instructed in collaboration with design organizations to carry out a field survey of this site on the lands of practical use of the Batken region by June 1 of this year.

The parties agreed to proceed with the design description of the Tajik-Kyrgyz state border line at the Vorukh section after the completion of the construction of the Khojai Alo-Vorukh road bypassing the eastern side of the Tangi (Kapchygai) settlement.

The parties agreed that the next joint meeting will take place in Tajikistan.
