National Strategy of Tajikistan on Countering Terrorism and Extremism Discussed at UN Headquarters in New York

DUSHANBE, 23.04.2022 (NIAT Khovar) – Yesterday, in partnership with United Nations Office on Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the European Union for the first time the High-level Briefing on the “National Strategy and Action Plan of the Republic of Tajikistan on Countering Terrorism and Extremism for 2021-2025” was convened at UN Headquarters in New York.
The event was attended by delegations of member states and experts of UN agencies on the prevention and countering violent extremism and terrorism, as well as representatives of various international, regional and specialized organizations.
The objective of the briefing was to reflect the progress and efforts of the country in countering terrorism and extremism in accordance with the adopted strategies and practical actions.
The opening segment of the briefing included statements by Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov, Permanent Representative of Tajikistan to the United Nations Jonibek Hikmat, Head of Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations Olof Skoog, Head of Legal Committee and Counter Terrorism, Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations Nidaa AbuAli, UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan Sezin Sinanoglu and Human Rights and Political Affairs Officer, UNRCCA Armands Pupols.
After the opening segment Prosecutor General of Tajikistan Yusuf Rahmon delivered a presentation on the National Strategy and Action Plan of Tajikistan on Countering Terrorism and Extremism for 2021-2025.
The presentation provided detailed information on the trends and prospects of the country’s regional and international cooperation on countering terrorism. The assistance of UN member states and other relevant institutions to Tajikistan in the implementation of the Strategy was endorsed and considered important.
In addition, the presentation provided information on the country’s efforts to prevent and counter security threats and challenges.
The delegations of Uzbekistan, OSCE, China, Oman, Australia, Tunisia, Mongolia, Latvia, Paraguay, Turkey, Singapore, Armenia, Bahrain, Iran and Morocco during their statements commended and highlighted the significant contribution and initiatives of the Government of Tajikistan on countering terrorism and extremism on the international stage.
