On April 25, 2025, during the 81st session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), on the initiative of the Republic of Tajikistan, the resolution “Strengthening cooperation on water resources and climate change for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region” was unanimously adopted, reports Foreign Ministry of Tajikistan.
According to the Resolution, the parties welcome the initiatives of the Republic of Tajikistan to hold in 2025 the International Conference on Glacier Protection and the Regional Preparatory Meeting for the UN Water Conference in 2026, and also call on all UN Member States, its relevant structures and other international and regional organizations, as well as interested parties, to take part in these events.
At the same time, this resolution calls the proclamation of 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, the recognition of March 21 as the World Day for Glaciers, and the holding by the Republic of Tajikistan the International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation in 2025 as opportunities for strengthening international solidarity.
It is worth noting that the adoption of this initiative is once again a testimony of the prominent role of Tajikistan plays in advancing the water and climate agenda, including glacier’s preservation at the global level.
