DUSHANBE, 30.05.2025 (NIAT Khovar) – Today, Dushanbe welcomes participants to the official opening of the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation — a landmark event drawing global attention to one of the most urgent climate challenges of our time.

The opening ceremony, held at the Kokhi Somon Palace, will feature statements from key global leaders, including the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Emomali Rahmon, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, H.E. Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, and United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, H.E. Amina J. Mohammed. Senior dignitaries and heads of delegations from across the globe are also expected to address the conference.

Following the official opening, the conference will continue with a series of thematic sessions, expert panel discussions, and high-level roundtables focusing on glacial protection, sustainable water management, and climate resilience.

More than 2,500 participants from over 80 countries have registered to attend. The event is being covered by over 500 journalists, including around 150 international media representatives from outlets such as Al Jazeera, Euronews, TRT Avaz, Agence France-Presse, and TASS. To support the press, a fully equipped media center with high-speed internet has been set up at the venue.

Over 120 trained volunteers are providing logistical, linguistic, and organizational support throughout the conference — assisting with guest services, registration, interpretation, and the coordination of side events.

The Dushanbe Conference is expected to culminate in the adoption of several significant international documents, including:

• The Dushanbe Glacier Declaration – a global call to urgent action on glacier preservation;
• The Co-Chairs’ Summary – key findings, conclusions, and strategic recommendations;
• The Dushanbe Call to Action – a political communiqué and roadmap for advancing international cooperation.

This high-level event is a major step in reinforcing the global climate agenda and building partnerships for the preservation of glaciers — one of the planet’s most critical sources of freshwater.

Importantly, Tajikistan has emerged as a central venue for global dialogue on climate change, reaffirming its leadership in environmental diplomacy.

The conference is being held as part of the International Year of Glacier Preservation, proclaimed at the initiative of the President of Tajikistan and endorsed by more than 150 UN Member States at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
