Fourth International High-Level Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028” officially opens today in Dushanbe, bringing together global leaders, diplomats, scientists and development partners for one of the world’s largest water diplomacy forums.

Held from May 25 to 28 as part of the internationally recognized Dushanbe Water Process, the conference continues the water diplomacy initiatives championed by Leader of the Nation, Emomali Rahmon and aims to accelerate international action on water security, climate resilience and sustainable development.

The official opening ceremony is taking place at Kokhi Somon Complex, where high-level delegations from UN member states, representatives of UN agencies, international financial institutions, regional organizations, civil society groups and the private sector are gathering to address mounting global challenges linked to water scarcity, sanitation and climate change.

Organizers say the conference is designed to strengthen momentum between the landmark 2023 UN Water Conference and the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, while mobilizing political commitment and investment for water-related Sustainable Development Goals.

The four-day forum includes high-level plenary meetings, thematic discussions and an international exhibition showcasing modern technologies and innovations in water management, environmental protection and sustainable development.

Discussions are centered around the themes “Water for People,” “Water for Prosperity,” and “Water for the Planet,” with participants expected to focus on international cooperation, sustainable water governance and financing for water infrastructure projects.

On Sunday, ahead of the official opening, Dushanbe hosted a series of pre-conference events, including expert forums, youth and women’s sessions, cultural programs and a Water Festival that brought together international guests and local participants.

According to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nearly 400 domestic and international journalists are covering the event, including representatives from Xinhua News Agency, Reuters, Al Jazeera, as well as French publications Le Monde and L’Express.

A dedicated international press center has been established at Kokhi Somon, equipped with live broadcasting facilities, high-speed internet access and media briefing areas to support global coverage of the summit.

Organizers have also mobilized more than 150 volunteers to assist delegations, coordinate logistics and support participants throughout the conference venues.

The conference will conclude on May 28 with study tours showcasing Tajikistan’s experience in hydropower development, water resource management and climate adaptation initiatives.
