A scientific conference marking 80 years of archaeological excavations at ancient Panjakent is being held at the Panjakent-Sarazm Archaeological Base and Sarazm 5,500th Anniversary Museum, Khovar reported, citing the Agency for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage under the government.
Titled “The Contribution of the Ancient Sogdiana and Tajikistan Archaeological Expedition to the Study of Ancient Panjakent,” the conference aims to review research findings, recognize scholars’ contributions to the study of the region’s history and culture, and highlight the importance of preserving Tajikistan’s historical heritage.
The event was organized at the initiative of the agency and focuses on the archaeological expedition established in 1945, which began excavations at ancient Panjakent in 1946.
Ancient Panjakent is one of Central Asia’s significant archaeological sites, offering insights into urban development, craftsmanship, art, religious beliefs and the social life of ancient Sogdiana.
Researchers have paid particular attention to the site’s wall paintings, which provide evidence of Sogdian traditions, artistic achievements, beliefs and everyday life.
The conference provides a platform for exchanging research findings, sharing scholarly experience and discussing ways to strengthen the preservation and promotion of the site’s cultural heritage.
The study of ancient Panjakent continues to contribute to understanding the history and civilization of the Tajik people and to showcasing the region’s historical legacy internationally. Preserving and promoting such archaeological sites is also important for safeguarding historical memory and passing cultural values on to future generations.
