Tajikistan organised High-Level Side Event “United by Water: Securing Our Collective Future Amidst Rising Seas and Melting Glaciers” on the margins of UNGA

DUSHANBE, 26.09.2024 (NIAT Khovar) – On September 25, 2024, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin took part and made a speech in a High-Level Side Event “United by Water: Securing Our Collective Future Amidst Rising Seas and Melting Glaciers,” initiated by our country.
The event was attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Antigua and Barbuda Mr.Chet Green, Egypt Mr.Badr Abdelatty, Indonesia Ms.Retno Marsudi, Saint Lucia Mr. Alva Baptiste, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Ms.Berris Ekinci, Deputy Secretary-General of the UN Mr.Li Junhua, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization Ms.Celeste Saulo, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, Chair of UN-Water Mr.Alvaro Lario, Special Envoy to the French President for the One Water Summit Ms.Barbara Pompili and others.
Participants noted the importance of this event in highlighting the pressing issues of rapid glacier melting and rising sea levels, which pose substantial economic losses and impact millions of lives. The side-event was recognized as an important stage in preparation for the International Conference Dedicated to Glaciers’ Preservation, scheduled for May 2025 in Dushanbe.
Following the event, the participants reaffirmed the need for glaciers’ preservation measures, sea level rise adaptation strategies, enhanced climate data collection and processing technology transfer for climate monitoring and financial support for vulnerable countries by partner countries and international organizations.
