UN Puts Syria Peace Negotiations on Hold until End of February

Dushanbe, 04.02.2016. (NIAT «Khovar»). — Negotiations on the settlement of the Syrian conflict in Geneva suspended until February 25. This was reported on Wednesday, February 3 by RIA Novosti with reference to the UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.
“From the first day of talks I said that we do not want negotiations for the sake of negotiations. The United Nations can not afford to procedural issues have become more important than the resolution of humanitarian problems for the Syrian people. So I decided to make a temporary pause. This is not the end of the negotiations” – he said.
As de Mistura said participants in the talks after their first-round needs to be done a lot of work. “After the first week of preparatory talks – and talks began they were– there are still a lot of works to be done. Not only us but also the stakeholders”– the diplomat said.
The next round of peace talks on Syria aimed to establish an official agreement between Damascus and the opposition of the country started at the end of January in Geneva. The negotiations are conducted in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution №2254. It is expected that the dialogue will last six months.
