DUSHANBE, 23.03.2018. (NIAT Khovar) — In New York, the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon took part in the joint action of Tajikistan with Group of Friends of Water titled “Priority actions on water resources, climate change, natural disasters risks reduction» within International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018 – 2028”.
President of the country, Emomali Rahmon, expressed his satisfaction with the successfully conducted first dialogue devoted to the launch of the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018 — 2028”.
The head of state, Emomali Rahmon urged that we should enhance and reinforce our efforts to achieve water related goals and targets.
Expressing concern over an unprecedented growing impact of climate change on nature and socio-economic situation of Tajikistan and Central Asia, the President of Tajikistan stressed that such natural disasters as inundation, mudflow, avalanche and landslide cause huge damage to the people and the national economy of the country every year.
Moreover, negative impact of climate change mostly hits quantity and quality of safe drinking water. Over the last decade, Tajikistan experienced rapid unprecedented ice melting, which is a vital source of life for all people and countries in Central Asia. Intensive ice melting and loss of glaciers in the region which are provoked by and inseparably linked with climate change effects, acknowledge the necessity and magnificence of such Strategy.
It was noted that Tajikistan places particular emphasis on measures aimed at advancing adaptation to climate change which is essential in sustainable development.
