The Tajik Delegation to the UN Initiated the Interlinkages Between Water and Climate Action
DUSHANBE, 28.03.2019. (NIAT Khovar) – A High-level event called Interlinkages Between Water and Climate Action was held on Wednesday at the UN Headquarters in New York at the initiative of Tajikistan’s delegation.
The event was organized in cooperation with the Permanent Missions of Canada, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, the Russian Federation, Singapore, Switzerland, the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and UN Water, reported the Tajik Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The opening segment started with the statement of the President of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly Maria Espinosa, Prime Minister of Fiji Voreqe Bainimarama, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin, Secretary General’s Special Envoy for 2019 Climate Summit Luis Alfonso de Alba, Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy, Mines and Sustainable Development of the Kingdom of Morocco Nezha El Ouafi and others.
The representatives of member-states, various UN agencies and other international organizations delivered their statements during the two interactive panels on the themes “Water and Climate Action” and “Means of Implementation.”
The first panel was chaired by Muhriddin, who emphasized the significant increase in the number of extreme natural phenomena in Tajikistan, which prove detrimental to the population and the economy of the country. He also noted the ever-increasing impact of climate change on the volume of glaciers.
Muhriddin called upon the representatives of the UN member-states to support the process of implementation of the initiative of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon on the International Decade for Action on Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028.
