Tajik Foreign Minister Attends the High-Level Conference on EU Strategy for Central Asia in Bucharest
DUSHANBE, 16.04.2019. (NIAT Khovar) – While on a visit to Bucharest, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin attended the Connectivity for Sustainable Development conference on Monday.
The meeting focused on the issues relating to the new EU Strategy for Central Asia, reported the Tajik Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At the opening session at the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Muhriddin spoke about the necessity of continuing the mutually beneficial cooperation of the countries of the region with the EU in order to enhance the economic, transit, transport, agriculture and energy potential of the countries of Central Asia, and to improve the investment climate and ensure sustainable development of the region.
According to EU’s Special Representative for Central Asia Peter Burian, who had visited Dushanbe earlier this year in March, the main goal of the new strategy is the sustainable development of Central Asian countries.
During the March meeting, Muhriddin had noted Tajikistan’s readiness to begin negotiations with the EU for an Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.
The EU and the foreign ministers of Tajikistan, and the other four Central Asian countries had held preparatory meetings in Brussels in November last year in order to define its strategy for the region. The new EU Strategy for Central Asia is planned to be adopted in June 2019.
