DUSHANBE, 16.02.2022 (NIAT Khovar) – On February 15 in honor of the announcement of 2025 as the International Year for the Protection of Glaciers, the National Museum in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Glaciers of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan organized a republican scientific conference on the topic “Glaciers of Tajikistan: Situation, State and Prospects.”
The conference was attended by the management and employees of the National Museum, representatives of the Center for the Study of Glaciers, the Committee for Environmental Protection, the Hydrometeorology Agency, the Tajik National University, and Sadriddin Ayni Tajik State Pedagogical University.
Tajikistan is a mountainous country with a large concentration of glaciers in Central Asia. Large and small glaciers make up 6% of its territory, being the main source of water for the largest river in Central Asia — the Amu Darya and the Aral Sea basin.
It is as a result of the attention of the country’s leadership to the melting of glaciers that the Center for the Study of Glaciers was created, which plays a key role in studying and determining the position of glaciers in Tajikistan.
The conference participants presented scientific reports on various topics on the situation, including the condition and prospects of the country’s glaciers.
Following the conference, scientists and researchers exchanged views on the discussed topics.
