Pakistan Hosts a conference on Tajikistan’s Global Initiatives on Climate and Water in Pakistan

DUSHANBE, 30.04.2024 (NIAT Khovar) – The Embassy of Tajikistan in Pakistan in collaboration with the government of the Punjab province and the University of Greater Asia (Grand Asia) initiated the first International Conference on climate change.
The conference was attended by more than 600 heads of meteorological institutes, water and climate institutes, representatives and specialists in climate, water and climate energy from European countries, institutes of energy and green energy, professors, students, domestic and foreign media.
Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Tajikistan in Pakistan Saidjon Shafizoda emphasized that Tajikistan, 93 percent of whose territory is mountainous, is considered one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change and annually faces floods, mudslides, landslides, avalanches and other natural disasters related to water, from which we suffer great material and property damage.
It was reported that in order to reduce the negative impact of climate change on the socio-economic spheres, the Government of Tajikistan is implementing the National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change for the period until 2030. Tajikistan’s share in greenhouse gas emissions is insignificant and ranks 130th in terms of the small volume of such emissions. That is, Tajikistan occupies a leading position in the world in terms of the small volume of such waste. Tajikistan is also considered one of the leading countries on the planet in terms of the percentage of green energy production.
It was noted that Tajikistan produces 98 percent of its electricity from hydroelectric power plants and ranks sixth in the world in terms of the percentage of green energy generated from renewable sources. In the future, green energy production capacity, as the main foundation for promoting a green economy, will double.
It was said that, at the initiative of the President of Tajikistan, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted 4 resolutions on water and one resolution declaring 2025 the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation and March 21 – World Glacier Day.
During his speech, the representative of Europe emphasized that in the last decade, Tajikistan has attracted the attention of the world community to pressing and extremely sensitive issues of today’s world, such as water, green energy, saving water resources, climate change, protecting glaciers, ensuring food security, practical measures to prevent terrorism and extremism, drugs and other issues.
The participants called Tajikistan’s initiatives very important and timely, as well as expressed gratitude to the country’s leadership.
During the event, Tajikistan’s global initiatives, conferences and symposia held in the country were demonstrated in video format for 15 minutes.
