DUSHANBE, 03.02.2026 (NIAT Khovar) – The Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan has launched preparations for a gradual transition to a 12-year general education system, in line with instructions from President Emomali Rahmon, Minister Rahim Saidzoda said at a press conference.
He noted that an interdepartmental working group has been established to develop a comprehensive action plan, prepare new educational programs, ensure the readiness of educational institutions, train teaching staff, and carry out public awareness and explanatory activities.
“There are more than 180 new-type educational institutions in Tajikistan. The transition to a 12-year system may initially be piloted in these institutions, as they have greater capacity and resources for implementing the new model,” Saidzoda noted.
The initiative is being implemented in line with the President’s directives and is regarded as a key stage in the ongoing reform of the national education system.
Education experts emphasize that the transition to a 12-year education system is an important step toward improving educational quality and aligning Tajikistan’s education framework with international standards. International experience demonstrates that this model has been successfully adopted and tested in many countries worldwide.
The Ministry of Education and Science stated that the transition will be carried out gradually, with the involvement of a broad range of specialists and careful consideration of national interests and international best practices.
President Emomali Rahmon reiterated the need to adapt the education system to international standards, including preparations for a 12-year education structure, in his Address to the Majlisi Oli on December 16, 2025. Similar priorities were also outlined in his addresses to Parliament in 2009 and 2011.
Officials note that the transition will contribute to better organization of academic and vocational education at the general education level, taking into account students’ talents, abilities, and intellectual and physical development, while enhancing overall education quality as a key factor in societal development.
