The President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation, Honorable Emomali Rahmon, also met in Bishkek with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Honorable Antonio Guterres.
During the meeting, gratitude was first expressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations for sending a congratulatory message on the adoption of the Resolution on the “Decade of Strengthening of Peace for Future Generations” and the Organization’s continued support for Tajikistan’s international initiatives, and it was emphasized that achieving the goals of this Decade will contribute to the further strengthening of peace and stability in the international arena.
Antonio Guterres, in turn, stated, among other things: “It is always for me an enormous pleasure to have the possibility to meet with you and to say how much we appreciate Tajikistan’s leadership in some of the most important global problems in the world.
It was thanks to Tajikistan that water became a central question in international debates. And it is Tajikistan that is leading the debate on glaciers.
And with the resolution, I believe Tajikistan has paved the way for us to organize a continuation of the efforts we have made in the back of the future with reforms of the organization, but also looking into the future now and especially the young generations that represent a new dimension.
We always support your initiatives. And at the same time, in relation to Tajikistan, whatever we can do to support the Government of Tajikistan for the development of the country, we are always also at your service.
I had some of the best moments as High Commissioner and the Secretary General visiting your country. Your hospitality is unparalleled. And not only you have a personal hospitality, but you have a fantastic country with fantastic people and enormous energy.
And I will never forget.
And I hope I will be able to come in the future in whatever capacity that I might have, even if it is just as a simple citizen of the world, to once again witness the very important role that Tajikistan plays today in international affairs.”
Furthermore, the President of our country stated that Tajikistan fully welcomes the efforts of the Organization’s leadership in achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, restoring trust and resolving conflicts and disagreements around the world, responding to the consequences of climate change, preventing the loss of biodiversity, and improving the socio-economic situation of countries.
The effective use of emerging digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, was considered important for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and it was emphasized that “Tajikistan took these goals as a basis when submitting the draft Resolution on “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Creating New Opportunities for Sustainable Development in Central Asia”.
Climate change, rapid melting of glaciers, depletion of water resources, and increased risks of natural disasters were considered the main threats to the modern world, and Tajikistan’s continuous efforts to attract greater attention of the international community to improving cooperation in the water and climate sectors within the framework of the “Dushanbe Water Process” were stressed.
Recalling Tajikistan’s further initiatives in this direction, including the effective organization and holding of the United Nations Water Conference in 2028 in Dushanbe, the Head of State, Emomali Rahmon, proposed the establishment of the “Dushanbe Water Framework” as a strategic guidance mechanism.
The meeting also discussed other regional and international issues of mutual interest.
