On September 21, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon, visited Asht District as part of his working visit to the cities and districts of Sughd Province.

The Head of State, Emomali Rahmon, first commissioned a 250-megawatt solar power plant in Shaydon Township.

Construction of the Asht photovoltaic power plant, with a capacity of 250 MW, was launched in November 2025 by Ayon Energy LLC. The facility was fully constructed and commissioned within a short period. The power plant was built on an area of 793 hectares and has a total capacity of 250 MW.

The construction of such a major energy facility in Asht District represents an important initiative for the development of the energy sector and the broader use of renewable energy sources. In modern conditions, utilizing natural resources, including solar energy, is one of the key areas of energy development. Tajikistan has abundant potential for solar energy utilization, and the implementation of new energy projects contributes to increasing generation capacity and strengthening the country’s energy foundation.

His Excellency Emomali Rahmon was informed that, as part of the implementation of the Asht solar power plant project, construction and installation works had been carried out at a rapid pace. A number of important infrastructure projects had also been completed to connect the new plant to the country’s unified power grid.

In particular, the construction of a 9.8-kilometer, double-circuit 220-kilovolt overhead transmission line from the power plant to the Asht 220/110/6-kilovolt substation had been completed.

A total of 36 transmission towers were installed along the route of the line, creating the necessary foundation for transmitting electricity generated by the plant to the national power system.

Construction of the facility was carried out with the involvement of Tajik and Chinese specialists. More than 600 construction workers from the open joint-stock company Tojikgidroelektromontazh and specialists from the People’s Republic of China participated in the construction process.

The involvement of such a large number of specialists and workers enabled the main construction works to be completed within a short period, using modern experience and practices in the construction of energy facilities. According to the plan, the capacity of the Asht photovoltaic solar power plant will reach 250 MW by the end of 2026.

Once its full designed capacity is commissioned, the plant could become one of the country’s important electricity-generation facilities using renewable energy sources.

The project also has significant economic and social importance. The implementation of such major energy projects not only increases the country’s generation capacity but also contributes to infrastructure development, the use of modern technologies, professional training, and the creation of new jobs. With the commissioning of the power plant, 50 local specialists have been provided with permanent employment.

The Asht solar power plant is being commissioned at a time when development initiatives in Tajikistan continue to advance the energy sector, increase generation capacity, and expand the use of renewable energy sources.

With the commissioning of the Asht solar power plant, electricity generation capacity in Sughd Province has increased by 61 percent. The solar power plant will provide 40 percent of Sughd Province’s electricity demand.

Since a significant portion of Sughd Province’s electricity is transmitted from the southern part of the country over long distances, the commencement of operations at the Asht solar power plant will also help reduce electricity transmission losses.

The Head of State, Emomali Rahmon, instructed that additional photovoltaic power plants with a total capacity of 700 MW be constructed and commissioned in Sughd Province in 2027.

To strengthen the operation of the province’s energy system, the Leader of the Nation recommended that electricity storage systems with a capacity of at least 200 megawatt-hours be commissioned in Sughd Province as soon as possible.

The construction of this major facility in Asht District represents another step toward developing the country’s energy sector and utilizing Tajikistan’s available natural resources.
