Italy quake death toll rises to 294
Dushanbe, 29.08.2016. /NIAT «Khovar»/. The death toll after a devastating earthquake in central Italy has soared to 294 people, the news agency ANSA reported on Saturday, citing Italy’s Civil Protection Department.
As many as 688 people have been injured in the earthquake and many of them are in a grave condition, the agency reported.
According to TASS news agency, almost 2,500 people who have lost their shelter have been accommodated at tent camps.
A 6.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Italy at 3:36 a.m. local time on August 24, with a 5.4-magnitude aftershock that followed the initial quake. The tremors affected a wide area in the Apennines, shocks were felt as far away as Perugia, Rieti and Norcia. The earthquake epicenter was registered in the Rieti province at a depth of 4 kilometers.
