Herat mosque blast kills dozens in Afghanistan
DUSHANBE, 02.08.2017. /NIAT «Khovar»/. Dozens of worshippers were killed and wounded when one suicide bomber blew himself up and a second opened fire inside a mosque in the capital of western Herat province late on Tuesday, Pajhwok Afghan News reports citing the Herat police spokesman Farhad Jilani.
According to the source, two suicide bombers targeted the Jawadia mosque of the Shiite minority in Bakrabad area of Herat City.
He said one of the attackers blew himself up and the second opened fire at the worshippers, killing and wounding at least 93.
A spokesman for the civil hospital in Herat City, Mohammad Rafique Sherzai, told Pajhwok that they had been delivered 29 dead bodies and more than 64 wounded people from the scene.
He said the casualty figure might be higher because some wounded and dead bodies had been evacuated to private hospitals.
Police chief, Mohammad Ayyub Ansar, confirmed the attackers were two militants who opened fire at the worshipers and then both suicide bombers blown up their explosives inside the mosque in Jawadia.
No one immediately took responsibility for the attack.
