Tajikistan and the World Bank Strengthen Cooperation on Climate Change

DUSHANBE, 14.11.2022 (NIAT Khovar) – On November 12 on the sidelines of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-27), the Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection Bahodur Sheralizoda met with Regional Director of the World Bank for Sustainable Development in Europe and Central Asia Samekh Wahba.
Sheralizoda expressed satisfaction with the process of cooperation and implementation of projects in the direction of climate change, improvement of meteorological services and landscape stability.
He also expressed gratitude for the support of the World Bank in implementing the policy of the government of Tajikistan on environmental issues and climate change.
Wahba presented information about the World Bank programs to support developing countries in adapting to climate change and reducing its negative impact on the economies of developing countries. In particular, in 2021, the World Bank adopted a 5-year action plan on climate change, which includes the development and implementation of projects in the areas of climate change adaptation and mitigation of its negative effects.
In order to achieve the main goals of Tajikistan, defined in the national strategy and programs for the improvement of meteorological services, Sheralizoda proposed to consider the allocation of additional funds within the framework of the Project “Renewal of meteorological services in Central Asia (additional funding), part C”.
The meeting also focused on the issue of providing technical assistance in the field of atmospheric air monitoring.
Regarding the implementation of National Determined Contributions and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Tajikistan, the Chairman of the Committee invited the World Bank to support the implementation of this document.
Following the meeting Sheralizoda invited Wahba to visit Tajikistan at an appropriate time.
