DUSHANBE, 17.06.2025 (NIAT Khovar) – “I am deeply grateful to the Republic of Tajikistan for its leadership in hosting and advancing the High-Level International Conference on Glacier Preservation. This is a critical moment: if we don’t act now, we are going to lose even more glaciers and ice,” said Caroline Gleich, a renowned American skier, mountaineer, and environmental advocate, in an interview with a correspondent of NIAT “Khovar.”

Tajikistan – The Land of Glaciers

As an environmentalist and a vocal proponent of climate reform and environmental justice, Gleich took part in the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers’ Protection, expressing her admiration for Tajikistan’s initiatives in this sphere.

“It is amazing to see so many different countries come together, and to witness the leadership and initiatives here that unite people,” said Gleich.

According to the experienced mountaineer and skier, glaciers are one of nature’s most awe-inspiring features, and Tajikistan, with its vast glacial landscapes, offers a striking example.

“Tajikistan is home to so much natural beauty, including glaciers, and we are here to show the world the beauty of Tajikistan,” she emphasized.

Promoting Ecotourism – A Shared Goal

“We need to show, through the example of Tajikistan, how ecotourism and mountaineering can serve as solutions and support the economies impacted by climate change,” said Gleich.

The American environmentalist also spoke about her experiences during the conference, noting that she had the opportunity to explore the country’s historical and cultural heritage.

“During our trip to Tajikistan, we had the opportunity to visit wonderful places in Dushanbe and the Hisor Fortress, and to get acquainted with the culture and traditions of the Tajik people,” she said.

Climbing a 5,000-Meter Peak – A Personal Challenge

As part of the conference, a sporting event titled “Eco-Run for Glaciers” was held at the “Safed Dara” tourism complex, with active participation from international guests. Caroline Gleich took part as a special guest of the event.

“We also plan to head into the mountains of Tajikistan, explore the glaciers, and climb to nearly 5,000 meters,” she shared.

Hope and Action for the Glaciers

Gleich expressed her appreciation for the conference, emphasizing its global significance.

“I am honored to be part of this event. It offers a valuable opportunity to study glacier-related challenges and to cooperate with the international community on strategies for preservation,” she said.

According to her, building global resilience must be a collective effort.

“The world must come together to develop strategies based on scientific and meteorological data. We need early warning systems and adaptation plans to reduce the risks and save lives,” said Gleich.

“There is a lot of hope for glaciers. Many people are working on innovative solutions. No matter who you are or where you come from, there is always a way for us to work together and take action on the climate crisis,” she added.

She also emphasized the importance of international cooperation:

“There are many things countries can’t do alone, but when we unite, we can share resources, technologies, and data. Climate change and glaciers do not recognize borders”.

Finally, Caroline Gleich expressed her appreciation for the warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage of Tajikistan.

“The Tajik people are incredibly hospitable. I noticed this throughout the International Conference. I feel honored to be here,” she concluded.
