French-Tajik Scientific Expedition to Karakul Lake
DUSHANBE, 01.06.2017. /NIAT “Khovar”/. Homidjon Nazarov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Republic of France attended a presentation of a scientific documentary on Lake Karakul, which is located in Eastern Tajikistan, held by the association Uranoscope de l’Ile de France. NIAT “Khovar” has been reported by the Embassy of Tajikistan in France.
According to the source, prior to their research, the association expressed its interest in cooperating with Tajikistan and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Geological Institute of Tajikistan, under the Academy of Sciences of the Republic. The scientists have explored the Karakul Lake in August 2016 and have identified the lake as a crater left by the fall of a meteorite which is estimated to be 5-10 million years of age. To date, the crater constitutes one of the largest geological formations of its kind on Earth.
It is reported that a number of scientists from various French universities attended the presentations, as well as freelance researches, who are interested in studying the region.
The association plans to further explore the crater and research the region of impact of the meteorite, which they believe is a unique place and could become a potential attraction not only for tourists but also for researchers and scientist.
