FM Muhriddin Attends CSTO Ministerial Meeting
DUSHANBE, 26.05.2020. (NIAT Khovar) – Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sirojiddin Muhriddin attended the Ministerial Council meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) via video conference.
CThe meeting focused on a range of pressing problems relating to international and regional security. They also exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan, as well as jointly counteracting modern challenges and threats.
The development of the CSTO’s peacekeeping potential, institutions of the Observer and the Organization’s Partner, and CSTO’s interaction with regional organizations such as the CIS and the SCO were also examined.
As part of the discussion of the current epidemiological situation, Muhriddin informed his counterparts about the measures taken by the Tajik government to counteract the spread of coronavirus.
In his speech, he also outlined the priority areas for Tajikistan’s cooperation within the framework of the CSTO and emphasized the need for the relentless fight against international terrorism and extremism, drugs and arms trafficking.
Muhriddin noted that as the country with the longest border with Afghanistan, Tajikistan is taking all possible military-political measures to mitigate the threats emanating from the country.
He stressed that the current situation requires an adequate response from CSTO member states, including strengthening the protection of the southern borders.
The officials adopted a series of joint statements, including on solidarity and mutual assistance in the fight against coronavirus infection, on supporting the UN Secretary General’s call for a global ceasefire on the occasion of the COVID-19 pandemic, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in World War II and confirmation of commitments to purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
