DUSHANBE, 26.04.2021 (NIAT Khovar) – A delegation of the Tajik Embassy in the United States headed by Ambassador Farrukh Hamralizoda attended a wreath laying ceremony at the Spirit of the Elbe memorial plaque at the Arlington Cemetery near Washington on April 25.
The ceremony in memory of the meeting of Soviet and American troops on the Elbe in 1945 was attended by American participants in World War II, veterans from the republics of the former USSR, representatives of the US State Department and the embassies of the CIS.
The meeting of Soviet and American troops in the area of the city of Torgau on the Elbe took place on April 25, 1945. The legendary meeting became the highest point in the allied relations of the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition. As a result of the meeting of the Allied troops, the remnants of the German armed forces were split into two parts — northern and southern. This significantly weakened their resistance, deprived them of their maneuverability, violated the unified command and control system, and accelerated their final defeat.
A memorial bronze plaque depicting Soviet and American troops shaking hands on the bridge over the Elbe was installed at the Arlington Cemetery in April 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the memorable event.
