Achievements of Environmental Protection and Global Initiatives of Tajikistan Will Be Presented in Nairobi

DUSHANBE, 01.03.2022 (NIAT Khovar) – The Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan Bahodur Sheralizoda will take part in the resumed fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly and in a special meeting of the Assembly dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the formation of the UN Environment Program, which will be held in Nairobi. The fifth session began yesterday and will last until March 2, and a special meeting will be held from March 3 through March 4.
The meeting will be chaired by the Minister of Climate and Environment of Norway Espen Barth Eide, under the overall theme «Strengthening Environmental Actions to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.» Participants are expected to adopt a political declaration on the topic and agree on a number of important initiatives to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, loss of biodiversity, waste pollution, through action on plastic pollution, ecological restoration, circular economy, and biodiversity protection.
The high-level dialogue will also highlight the achievements of Tajikistan in environmental protection, President Emomali Rahmon’s global initiatives, including the declaration of 2025 as the Year of Glacier Protection and the declaration of the International Day for the Protection of Glaciers.
A joint high-level segment for the two sessions will be organized from March 2 through March 4, which is expected to bring together Environment Ministers, as well as individual heads of state in-person to help strengthen the implementation of the environmental dimension of the Sustainable Development Goals.
