New York Hosts First Meeting of the Group of Friends on Glaciers

DUSHANBE, 20.12.2023 (NIAT Khovar) – The first meeting of the Group of Friends on Glaciers co-chaired by the Permanent Missions of Tajikistan and Argentina to the UN was held at the UN Headquarters.
The Group of Friends on Glaciers was created at the initiative of Tajikistan and Argentina with the aim of fulfilling the mandates outlined in a UN General Assembly resolution that declared 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation. This resolution was supported by the international community based on a initiative of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon.
The Permanent Representative of Tajikistan to the UN noted the importance of the glaciers and the establishment of the Group, as well as emphasized the timeliness of the resolution, aimed at developing solutions to the issues related to glacier melting and the upcoming International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation, scheduled for 2025 in Tajikistan.
