Tajikistan, the initiator of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028” and co-chair of the United Nations Water Conference 2023, continues to promote the global water agenda.
Building on the achievements of previous Dushanbe water conferences in 2018, 2022 and 2024, the fourth conference aims to maintain the momentum generated by the 2023 U.N. Water Conference, advance the implementation of the Water Action Agenda and begin discussions in preparation for the 2028 U.N. Water Conference planned to be held in Tajikistan, as well as the role of water in the post-2030 development agenda.
Heads of state and government, ministers, U.N. agencies, international and regional organizations, financial institutions, academia, civil society, youth and private-sector representatives are expected to participate to advance commitments and promote transformative solutions in the water sector.
The conference program, under the Water Action Agenda, will include high-level plenary sessions, six thematic sessions corresponding to the themes of the interactive dialogues of the 2026 U.N. Water Conference, three special future-oriented panels, forums, side events, an international exhibition and a regional preparatory meeting organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
Participants will also visit several regions of Tajikistan to learn about the country’s cultural and historical heritage, water potential and resources, as well as its experience in sustainable water management and hydropower development.
The main outcomes of the conference will be reflected in the final declaration, the co-chairs’ conclusions and the official contribution to the 2026 U.N. Water Conference.
