Tajikistan has positioned itself as an active advocate of global water initiatives through a series of United Nations resolutions and international forums.
On Dec. 21, 2016, the U.N. General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/71/222, proclaiming 2018–2028 the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development.” The initiative was proposed by Tajikistan at the 2015 World Water Forum, according to the Dushanbe Water Process Secretariat.
On Dec. 14, 2022, the General Assembly adopted another resolution at Tajikistan’s initiative declaring 2025 the International Year of Glacier Conservation. The resolution aims to raise awareness of the importance of glaciers and the challenges posed by climate change and water resource management.
Officials say these efforts have strengthened Tajikistan’s status as a platform for international dialogue on water and climate issues, promoting the exchange of knowledge, technology and best practices among countries and organizations.
The Fourth International Dushanbe Water Conference is expected to further reinforce the country’s role as a global water hub.
The conference will bring together government representatives, U.N. agencies, financial institutions, scientists and civil society organizations to advance joint action, share experience and prepare for the 2028 U.N. Water Conference, with a focus on sustainable solutions for water management and climate resilience.
