Tajikistan, UN Discuss Sustainable Development, Water and Climate Initiatives

DUSHANBE, 21.03.2026 (NIAT Khovar) – On 19 March 2026, in New York, on the sidelines of the World Water Day celebrations, a meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, and UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Li Junhua.
According to the Foreign Ministry of the country, during the meeting, cooperation between Tajikistan and the UN in the economic, social and environmental spheres, and the progress made in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, were discussed.
Minister of Foreign Affairs S. Muhriddin stressed that achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals is one of the main priorities of Tajikistan, and in this regard, the country’s global initiatives to advance the Global Water Agenda, glacier preservation and combating climate change make a significant contribution.
The parties also exchanged views on preparations for the 4th International High-Level Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018–2028. In this regard, it was noted that this event will provide a strong and continuous foundation for the effective preparation and successful holding of the UN Water Conferences in 2026 and 2028.
