Tajikistan, UNEP Discuss Opening Office, Expanding Cooperation

Within the framework of the Regional Environmental Summit (#RES2026) in Astana, a bilateral meeting was held between the Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan, Bahodur Sheralizoda, and the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Inger Andersen.
The sides discussed expanding bilateral cooperation within UNEP’s mandate, as well as the prospects of establishing a UNEP office in Tajikistan.
Particular attention was given to the United Nations Environment Assembly resolution titled “Conservation of glaciers and the cryosphere as a whole, especially in mountainous regions”. Andersen expressed readiness for close cooperation with Tajikistan as the initiator of the resolution.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides exchanged views on strengthening cooperation and advancing joint initiatives in environmental protection, climate change, biodiversity, and related areas.
