Death Toll from Avalanches in Khorug Reaches 13 People

DUSHANBE, 16.02.2023 (NIAT Khovar) – The death toll from avalanches in Khorug reached 13 people, as well as the number of injured – 12 people, reports the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense.
Also 4 residential buildings completely and 35 partially damaged. Five household objects were caused by damage.
On February 15, at approximately 9:50 am local time, as a result of heavy snowfall, a large avalanche descended on the residential buildings of the Nosir Khusrav settlement in Khorug.
The Regional Commission for Emergency Situations determines the damage.
On that day, at about 12:80, a 30-year-old resident of the Sadvad village of the Vanj district fell under an avalanche and died. His body was recovered by the locals.
At 5:10 pm, two residents of the Khaspo village of the Vanj district, who arrived for the funeral rite of the deceased resident of the Sadvad village, also fell under the avalanche, one was rescued, the search for the other continues.
According to the Committee, from February 13 through February 15, 27 cases of avalanches were registered in Tajikistan.
In order to evacuate the population from dangerous areas to safe places, 11 farms were evacuated in Vanj district, 335 farms in Rushon district, 10 farms in Shugnon district, 39 farms in Roshtkala district and 17 farms in Khorug.
Also on February 15, at about 12:00, avalanches descended on the 65th km of the Dushanbe-Varzob highway, killing a 47-year-old driver. His body was removed by the rescuers of the Committee.
According to forecasters, the danger of avalanches will remain until February 19.
Earlier, the Committee has already reported that due to warming in recent days and precipitation, the danger of avalanches remains in the western regions of GBAO, in the mountains of the Hissor Range, as well as on the Dushanbe-Khorug, Dushanbe-Khujand, Dushanbe-Lakhsh, Khorug — Murghob, and Khorug – Ishkoshim highways.
