Tajikistan and UNESCO are preparing for International Conference on Glacier Preservation to be held in Dushanbe

DUSHANBE, 27.11.2024 /NIAT “Khovar”/. On November 26, 2024, an online meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin and Lidia Brito, the UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the preparation for the upcoming “International Conference on Glacier Preservation” in Tajikistan in 2025. The parties emphasised the danger of glacier melting in Central Asia, especially in light of the impact of climate change on water resources in the region. At the same time, aspects of potential joint co-operation for monitoring glacier melt, assessing environmental problems and developing adaptation strategies for local communities that depend on glacial lake systems were considered.
The meeting focused on coordinating scientific research, sharing expertise, and establishing a comprehensive framework for the upcoming conference that would bring together international experts, local stakeholders, and policy makers to address the pressing issues surrounding glacial ecosystems in Tajikistan.
