Tajik Customs, Japanese Firm Sign Deal on Cargo Scanning Upgrade Project

DUSHANBE, 20.02.2026 (NIAT Khovar) – An agreement on consulting services has been signed between the Customs Service under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and Japan’s Yachiyo Engineering Co., LTD for a project to upgrade cargo-scanning equipment at the Spitamen customs point along the international Trans-Caspian transport corridor.
According to NIAT Khovar, citing the Customs Service, the agreement was signed in Dushanbe between the agency’s leadership and a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The project focuses on improving scanning capacity at the customs control point in Spitamen District under the regional customs department in the Sughd Region. Discussions centered on research conducted by Japanese specialists and plans to further refine the project to strengthen customs scanning infrastructure.
Officials said a tender for the procurement and supply of scanning equipment is expected in May 2026. Manufacturing of the equipment after the tender process is projected to take about 11 months.
The JICA study group previously carried out field missions in Tajikistan in 2024 and 2025. Based on those missions, preliminary design and economic assessments were completed in Japan.
