The extent of glacier melting in Tajikistan «amazed» the UN Secretary General
DUSHANBE, 13.06.2017 /NIAT “Khovar”/. In the evening of June 11, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited Tajikistan. On the way to Sarez Lake he flew over the Pamirs. According to his press secretary, Antonio Guterres was impressed.
“Shocked to see effects of climate change — 30% of Tajikistan’s spectacular glaciers melted. There’s no time to lose to take climate action”, — says UN Secretary-General on his Twitter page.
During his visit to Tajikistan Antonio Guterres once again urged countries to strengthen the fight against climate change. According to him, humanity has no right to waste the time.
We will recall that the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon has repeatedly drawn world community attention to the problem of glacier melting. “The climate change leads to rapid melting of glaciers and have negative impact on the water volume of rivers and thus to the main sectors of the national economy, such as energy, agriculture and industry”, — noted the President of Tajikistan in his statement at the opening session of the high-level event on “Strengthening partnership for sustainable development goals achievements in the face of modern threats and challenges” on June 12 here in Dushanbe.
The Head of State Emomali Rahmon stressed that therefore, in recent years, the Government of Tajikistan has been giving particular attention to the solution of challenges related to the climate change, as well as calling upon the international community to develop and expand cooperation in the mentioned areas.
