SCO Observer Mission Recognizes Tajikistan’s Elections as Transparent and Democratic
DUSHANBE, 02.03.2020. (NIAT Khovar) – The elections in Tajikistan met the requirements of the Tajik electoral legislation and its international obligations. This was said today at a press conference by the SCO Observer Mission Head, the SCO Deputy Secretary General Nurlan Akkoshkarov.
The Mission did not observe any violations of national legislation that could cast doubt on the legitimacy of the elections.
“The Mission recognizes the elections as transparent, reliable and democratic. The Mission states that the elections of deputies to the Supreme Assembly were an important step towards the development of democratic processes in Tajikistan,” Akkoshkarov noted.
During their activities, SCO Mission members visited 314 polling stations, as well as regional and district election bodies of Tajikistan.
According to the results of observations, Mission members observed the active participation of voters and a high turnout, including amoung younger citizens. Members of election commissions provided the necessary conditions for the implementation of the voting procedure.
The Mission also held a number of meetings and talks with the leaderships of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Tajikistan, as well as with the chairmen, secretaries and members of city, district and precinct election commissions, voters, local observers, representatives of political parties, and the media.
SCO Observer Mission was in Tajikistan from February 27 through March 1 at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is the 52nd Mission to observe the preparation and holding of elections to the Supreme Assembly.
The SCO Mission considers the invitation of international observers as the desire of the Tajik leadership to ensure maximum openness, transparency and democratic elections.
The elections of the Deputies to the Assembly of Representatives and local Assemblies of People’s Deputies were held in Tajikistan on March 1.
