Divorce Rates Lower During the COVID-19 Pandemic
DUSHANBE, 13.07.2020. (NIAT Khovar) – For the first six months of 2020, divorce rates have decreased compared to the same period last year. This was announced today at a press conference by the head of the Civil Status Registration Office of the Ministry of Justice Saodatbibi Sirojzoda.
According to her, over this period there were 29,955 marriage licences issued (33,265 in 2019). Divorce filings, on the other hand reached 5,486 (6,065 in 2019).
“During the COVID-19 pandemic in foreign countries, on the contrary, family disintegration turned into a global problem. According to experts, in such a situation even exemplary families could not resist the conflicts that arise as a result of being confined for an extended period within four walls. Fortunately, this situation did not result in the same alarming tendency in Tajikistan,” said Sirojzoda.
The decrease in the number of marriage certificates issued is connected with the prohibition of wedding ceremonies and large gatherings due to the pandemic. However, the decrease in divorce rates is associated with an increase in the family education of young people.
“Disagreement, childlessness, migration, illness, economic hardshisp, and the lack of awareness of young people are the main reasons for divorce,” she added.
According to the data, divorce rates are higher in the Sughd region, standing at 1922 filings. In the Khatlon region there were 1230 filings during the same period, in the GBAO there were 80, in Dushanbe 931, and in the districts of republican subordinations there were 1323.
